Colby is an Australian Shepherd, just getting started on his show career. He was injured as a puppy and got a late start to competing. He always wants to please, and gets upset if he thinks he did something wrong. He is a soft dog. I have to work him through things slowly or he gets frustrated and shuts down.

Sometimes that is playing with the other dogs or trying to keep the cats in line. When I get her focused on a job, she is an awesome worker. But she can get distracted easily. She has some herding instinct, which I am trying to cultivate.

Even with her hyper tendencies, Scout is a great dog to work with. She enjoys helping around the farm too. I have high hopes for her when she starts to settle down more.

Schultz was my first competition dog, a German Shepherd. He started my journey. We had some struggles along the way. He had low confidence, which manifested itself in reactive barking and he would shut down in the show ring. He taught me to try new things and go with the flow. He loved training, but struggled in the show ring. I had to learn to go with what he was able to give me at that time. Not to get upset when he would mess up at a show. The training and showing helped to build his confidence.
We competed in rally, obedience, musical freestyle, schutzhund, and scent work.
He taught me to listen to my dog. We tried for several years to earn an Open Obedience title, without ever qualifying. I stepped away from Obedience and concentrated on Rally for awhile. When we came back to Obedience, still had the same problem. He did not enjoy Obedience in a show environment, but he did like Rally. When we stopped showing Obedience and just concentrated on Rally, his scores improved. He was trying to tell me that Rally was his thing. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what is needed for your dog, more practice and perseverance, or step back and try something else. He qualified to go to AKC Rally Nationals at the championship level, two years in a row. We were able to show at Rally Nationals in 2018, and came in 96 out of 120 of the top dogs in the country. I was so proud of him!
His last show was a schutzhund trial. He was doing STP-1 (scent work type class). He had the highest score of the day (96 out of a possible 100) in any of the classes and was the oldest dog competing, he was 9 years old at the time. He was not very fast or flashy, but he was methodical in his work and got the job done.
Schultz was a great dog, he taught me a lot, and was a good friend. He will be greatly missed.
